Gluten Free Brown Gravy

Velvety smooth Brown Gravy, without a smidgen of gluten or dairy in sight. It's absurdly quick and easy to make, and can be ready in about 5 minutes!

My family loves brown gravy with most of their meals. And lets face it, whats a serving of mashed potatoes, or tender pot roast, without some rich and creamy gravy spooned on top? Traditional gravy is usually made with a roux of butter and flour, and while that makes a delicious gravy, it's a no-no for those of us who are gluten intolerant.

I'm the only one in my family who has to deal with that dietary restriction, so for quite awhile I still made the traditional version my family loved, while suffering quietly as I watched them devour their mashed potatoes smothered in gravy. I finally decided I had done without for long enough, and set about making a gluten free brown gravy that was just as tasty as my original recipe.

Thankfully it couldn't be easier to make, and uses just four simple ingredients, plus salt and pepper. It takes about 5 minutes to prepare, with common ingredients most of us have in our pantry, so you can whip it up at a moments notice. Beef broth and a small amount of olive oil are brought to a simmer, a slurry of corn starch and water is added, then finished off with salt and pepper to taste. That's it! Now how easy was that?

The flavor of this homemade brown gravy tastes 100 times better than those store-bought gravies in a jar, or the chemical-laden mixes in little foil packets. And it's gluten free, so now there's no reason why you can't enjoy gravy again if you're gluten intolerant!

Gluten Free Brown Gravy

2 cups beef broth, homemade, or made with bouillon (other flavors of broth may be substituted)
2 tablespoons pure olive oil
2 tablespoons corn starch
1/4 cup cold water
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Bring beef broth and olive oil to a simmer, in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
Stir corn starch and water together in a small bowl until smooth. Add to simmering broth, stirring constantly with a wire whisk until it becomes thickened and bubbly. (1 - 2 minutes)
Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve. Gravy will continue to thicken as it cools.

Cooks Note: *If using a store-bought broth or bouillon, make sure it is gluten free.
