Hearty Spaghetti Sauce

This thick and meaty Hearty Spaghetti Sauce is a family favorite. My family gobbles it up whenever I make it, and there are rarely any leftovers.

I recently shared my recipe for Hearty Spaghetti Sauce on another post I did for Cheesy Spaghetti Squash Casserole. This spaghetti sauce is so tasty though, that I thought it deserved it's own post. Thick, rich, and loaded with tomatoes and meat, this is a sauce that pairs beautifully with spaghetti, (spaghetti squash for me) and makes for a filling dish. Add some garlic bread and a small salad on the side, and you have a complete meal.

It couldn't be easier to make. Just brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic, drain and add the rest of the ingredients, then simmer for one hour. That's it! Once you try this spaghetti sauce, you'll never go back to the store-bought stuff in a jar again. Don't stop at just spaghetti though, this sauce makes a killer lasagna too.

Hearty Spaghetti Sauce


1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
3 - 8 ounce cans tomato sauce
1 - 14.5 ounce can petite diced tomatoes
1 - 6 ounce can tomato paste + 1 can of water
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon sugar
3 or 4 grinds of fresh ground black pepper


Combine ground beef, onion, and garlic in a large saucepan.
Cook, stirring frequently, until meat is browned and vegetables are tender. Drain grease.
Stir tomato sauce, diced tomatoes with juice, tomato paste, water, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and sugar into the cooked beef.
Simmer sauce for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Serve and enjoy.

Cooks notes: *Leftovers, if there are any, can be frozen and reheated for future meals. Let cool completely, pour into an air tight container, and freeze. Use within one month.

*Want to cook the sauce in a crockpot? Brown beef with onion and garlic. Place cooked beef in the crockpot, then add the rest of the ingredients. Stir, place the lid on and cook on LOW for 3 - 4 hours, or on HIGH for 1 - 2 hours.
